‘People should be able to find a piece of themselves in the sound, and the music reflect the people who visit here’ – Rag Market Trader

Radio Stall is a nomadic community radio and public art installation. Responding to the needs and dreams of its community; aiming to collectivise public space through sonic amplification and creative expression, part dream part ethnography, operating in and for UK market life and culture.

We began operating from a stall in the Birmingham Rag Market. The co-led radio station was set up to forge alliances with traders, artists and the public to preserve market culture in the city, in light of an ongoing regeneration project which threatens to close and demolish the current market site within the next five years.

We see the market as an infinitely inspiring place through its vast array of sensory contradictions, diverse communities, deep conversations, genuine life line for many as the potential for fantastical societal change.

Collaborations so far:

The Rag Market, Birmingham

West Bromwich Indoor Market in Collaboration with The Birmingham Opera Company

Gallery and Studio Visits

With each change in location we Invite artists, local traders, the public, DJs, musicians to share memories, conversations, ideas, actions, dreams, archives, music, requests for change, soundscapes to reflect on and shape our immediate environment.

Through collaboration, conversation, sculpture and sound making the station creates an opportunity to collectively experiment with broadcasting and reimagine public space. We go where the need to amplify is…
